Motoring History

The West Midlands is known for its strong connection with the manufacture of motor vehicles with the British Motor Museum located in Gaydon, Warwickshire adjacent to the Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility.

The Morgan Connection
Situated in rural Worcestershire is one of the World’s oldest surviving independent motor car manufacturers. Nestling below the Malvern Hills at Malvern Link is the Morgan sports car factory, still producing high quality hand-built cars.
The company has a rich history with Harry (H.F.S. as he was known) Morgan opening a garage there in 1905, servicing and hiring cars and motorcycles. In 1909 with the assistance of Mr. William Stevenson-Peach, the engineering master at Malvern College, he designed and produced a powerful lightweight three-wheel car for his personal transport.
It proved to be so popular that the following year, he was persuaded to produce them for sale to the general public, and later in 1910 he exhibited his car at the Cycle Car and Motor Cycle show held at Olympia.
In 1914 H.F.S. bought a piece of land in Pickersleigh Road and built the first workshop of his new factory. The company continues to manufacture on this site 115 years later.
There are guided tours of the factory and Kenneth, for the past 10 years, has been a part time Factory Tour Guide. Kenneth is a long-standing Morgan Owner.

Study of Historic Vehicles

Kenneth has an expanding collection historic motor- related catalogues and brochures which include cars and extend to pre-war commercial vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles. Acquisitions of further brochures are always welcome – please contact Kenneth if you have any of interest which you would like to dispose of.

Along with books on motoring history, these brochures enable Kenneth to make a study of the development of personal mechanised transport, the social changes that resulted and the changes in fashion which influenced both the design of vehicles and how they were marketed through brochures, events and other advertising media.
Kenneth provides illustrated talks and presentations on some of the earlier trends and influences on vehicle design and construction.
